Carbon can bond with both O AND O2. However neither carbon nor oxygen exhibit variable valency . How is this possible ??????? Plz answer fast

Actually here Carbon SHOWS coordinate bond with Oxygen in Carbon Monoxide i.e. CO

But in case of Carbon Dioxide... the former forms DOUBLE bond with TWO atoms of Oxygen..
O=C=O is carbon dioxide
