Answer» Biological magnification is the phenomena in which certain harmful chemicals enter the organisms and become concentrated at higher tropic level as they travel along the food chain. Farmers use pesticides and fertilisers to protect their crops which are washed in thesoil and water. From soil they are absorbed by the plants along with other nutrition and from water they are absorbed by aquatic plants. Since these substances are non-biodegrable they get accumlated in each progressive level. Human beings acquired top level in any food chain so most substances get accumlated in our body. This is known as Biological Magnification. Biological magnification often refers to the process whereby certain substances such as pesticides or heavy metals move up the food chain, work their way into rivers or lakes, and are eaten by aquatic organisms such as fish, which in turn are eaten by large birds, animals or humans. Biological magnification is the increasing concentration of chemicals or toxic substance in an organism. It is a phenomenon in which the pesticides or chemicals given to crops r further transferred to organisms. The organism at higher trophic level will have more concentration of chemical in its body. |
