| Answer» A rat hunt was started in 1902. Many Vietnamese workers were hired andpaid for each rat they caught. The bounty was paid when a tail was given asproof that a rat had been killed. So the rat-catchers took to just clipping thetails and releasing the rats, so that the process could be repeated, over andover again. Defeated by the resistance of the weak, the French were forcedto stop the bounty programme as it did not help to stop the rat invasion. Ina way, the rat menace marks the limits of the French power. | |
