Calculate the compressibility factor for SO_(2), if 1 mole of it occupies 0.35 litre at 300 K and 50 atm. Also comment on the result. |

Answer» Solution :P=50 atm, V=0.35 litre, T=300 K, n=1 `therefore Z=(PV)/(NRT) -(50xx0.35)/(1xx0.0821xx300)=0.711` The Z values are lesser than unity and thus, we can conclude the FOLLOWING (a) In `SO_(2)` ATTRACTIVE forces predominates, i.e. gas can be compressed easily (b) `(V_(M))/(V_(M"ideal") lt 0.711" or "V_(M)` is lesser than the volume of ideal gas. In other words gas is more COMPRESSIBLE than ideal gas. |
