| Answer» Solution :In the lanhanoids, 4f and 5d subshells are very close in energy. The OUTERMOST 6s orbital remains filled with 2 electrons `( 6s^(2))`. The electron can easily JUMP from 4f to 5d or vice-versa. Further, irregularities in ELECTRONIC CONFIGURATION are also RELATED to the stabilities of `f^(0), f^(7)` and `f^(14)` occupacy of f-orbitals.
