Briefly explain the acidic nature of phenols. |
Answer» Solution :The acidic nature of phenols can be explained on the BASIS of resonance. Due to resonance in phenol the `O-` atom of `-O-H` group acquires slight `+ve` charge and `H-` atom is RELEASED as proton. ALSO phenoxide ion is more stabilised due to resonance. `therefore"The equilibrium (1) will shift towards R.H.S. giving more of "H^(+)" ions."` |
