Briefly describe the transport of CO2 in the blood. |
|
Answer» (i) As carbaminohaemoglobin (ii) CO2 combines with H2O in the presence of carbonic anhydrase to form H2CO3. H2CO3 dissociates to form H+ + HCO3–. At the tissue site, where pCO2 is high due to catabolism, CO2 diffuses into blood and stores HCO3– and H+. At the alveolar site, where pCO2 is low, formation of CO2 and H2O takes place. Thus CO2 trapped as HCO3 – at the tissue level and transported to the alveoli is released as CO2. |
