1.

Briefly describe the transport of CO2 in the blood.

Answer»

(i) As carbaminohaemoglobin

(ii) CO2 combines with H2O in the presence of carbonic anhydrase to form H2CO3. H2CO3 dissociates to form H+ + HCO3. At the tissue site, where pCO2 is high due to catabolism, CO2 diffuses into blood and stores HCO3and H+. At the alveolar site, where pCO2 is low, formation of CO2 and H2O takes place. Thus CO2 trapped as HCO3 at the tissue level and transported to the alveoli is released as CO2.
