Bismuth in +5 oxidation state is a strong oxidising agent. Why?

Answer»

Solution :Due to the LARGEST atomic volume of Bi, the largest nuclear charge, +5 oxidation state of Bi is LESS STABLE and has a strong tendency to accept electrons and reduce to stable +3 state. Therefore BISMUTH in +5 oxidation state acts as a strong oxidising agent.
