Based on the group valency of elements state the formula for the following giving justification for each : (i) Oxides of 1st group elements, (ii) Halides of the elements of group 13, (iii) Compounds formed when an element of group 2 combines with an element of group 16. |

Answer» (i) The valency of the group 1 elements is 1 and that of oxygen is 2. Therefore, the formula of the oxides of the elements is `E_(2)O.` (ii) The valency of group 13 elements is 3 and that of halogens is 1. Therefore, the formula of the chlorides of the elements is `EX_(3).` (iii) The valency of group 2 elements is 2 while that of the elements present in group 16 is also 2. The formula of the compound formed is `E_(2)O_(2)" or "EO` (oxygen is the first member of group 16). |
