Mutually Exclusive Events:Two events, A and B, are said to be mutually exclusive if the occurrence of A prohibits the occurrence of B (and vice versa)

For instance, if you cast a die, the occurrence of '1' prohibits the occurrence of '2'. Hence, A = {'1' occurs} and B = {'2' occurs} are mutually exclusive.

Exhaustive Events:Two events, A and B, are said to be exhaustive ifat least one of themwill definitely occur.

For instance, if you cast a die, at least one of the following events will occur:

A={a number smaller than '5' shows up}

B={a number larger than '2' shows up}

Note: These definitions can easily be extended to include more than 2 events. 10 given events will be mutually exclusive if the occurrence ofanyof them prohibits the occurrence of the remaining 9. The same 10 events will be exhaustive if at least one of these 10 events always occurs.

Combining the above definitions, the system of mutually exclusive and exhaustive events basically partitions the set of all possible events into subsets, such thatexactly 1of these subsets will always occur.
