1.

An organie compound (A) of molecular formula C_6H_6O gives violet colour with neutral FeCl_3.(A) reacts benzene diazonium chloride in basic medium to give (B) as an azo dye. (A) reacts with acidified K_2Cr_2O_7 gives (C) of fornmula C_6H_4O_2. (A)on reaction with H, in the presence of nickel gives (D) of formula C_6H_12O.Identify A, B, C, D and explain the reaction involved.

Answer»

SOLUTION :(i)(A) of molecular formula `C_6H_6O` gives VIOLET colour with neutral `FeCl_3` means it must be Phenol - `C_6H_5OH`.
(ii) Phenol couples with benzene diazonium chloride in the PRESENCE of basic medium to PRODUCE p-hydroxy azo benzene, a red ORANGE dye as (B).

(ii) Phenol on reaction with acidified `K_2Cr_2O_7` undergoesoxidation reaction to give 1,4-benzo quinone as (C).

(iv) Phenol on reaction with H2, in the presence of Nickel gives cyclohexanol as (D).
