An aqueous solution contains Hg^(2+),Hg_(2)^(2+),Pb^(2+),Ag^(+),Bi_(3+) and Cd^(2+).Out of these, how many ions will produce white precipitate with dilule HCl ? |

Answer» `Ag^(+) + Cl^(-) to AgCl darr` (white) `K_(sp)` of CHLORIDES of `Pb^(2+)` and `Hg_(2)^(2+)` is low as compared to `K_(sp)` of `Hg^(2+)` and `Cd^(2+)`. Chloride ion concentration provided by dilute `HCl` is just enough to EXCEED the `K_(sp)` of `PbCl_(2)` and `Hg_(2)Cl_(2)`. Thus `Pb^(2+)` and `Hg_(2)^(2+)` are PRECIPITATED as their chlorides. |
