(a) What would be observed on adding a 5% alkaline potassium permanganate solution drop by drop to some warm ethanol in a test-tube ? Write the name of the compound formed during the chemical reaction. Also write chemical equation of the reaction which takes place. (b) How would you distinguish experimentally between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid on the basis of a chemical property ? Lakhmir Singh Chemistry Class 10 |

Answer» tion:a) on adding a 5% ALKALINE potassium permanganate (KMNO4) solution drop by drop to some WARM ethanol in a test-tube the colour of KMnO4 will disappear as it will take part in the oxidation of ethanol. Thus, ethanol is oxidized to produce ethanoic acid. The chemical reaction will be - C2H50H →→ (KMNO4) CH3COOH where (KMNO4) is the oxidizing agent.b) Based on their reaction to carbonates and hydrogen carbonates, we can distinguish between an alcohol and a carboxylic acid. Acid responds to the DEVELOPMENT of CO2 gas with carbonate and hydrogen carbonate, which makes lime water milky. On the other hand, alcohols do not react with carbonates and carbonates of hydrogen. |
