(a) The logarithm of any number contains two parts. One before the decimal is called Characteristic and other the decimal term is called the Mantissa. It is only the mantissa which weget to know from the Logarithmic table. The characteristic is found by the rule that it is always lessby 1 from the number of digits before the decimal of any number. Thus in 980, the number of digitsare 3 and hence the characteristic is 2, in 0.486 number of digits before decimal is O and hence thecharacteristic is - 1 written as T. As you can see the characteristic can be negative incertain casesbut the mantissa always remains positive. |

Answer» The INTEGRAL part of a COMMON logarithm is called the CHARACTERISTIC and the non-negative decimal part is called the MANTISSA. Suppose, log 39.2 = 1.5933, then 1 is the characteristic and 5933 is the mantissa of the logarithm. mark me as brainliest.u like my answer. |
