Let : V = Total VOLUME of the piece of iron.v = The volume of the portion of iron outside mercury.= > The piece of iron will FLOAT if weight of iron piece = wt. of mercury displaced by immersed portion of iron.= > ( V × 7.8 × 10³ × G ) = ( V  - v ) × 13.6 × 10³ × g= >  ( V × 7.8 × 10³ ) = ( V  - v ) × 13.6 × 10³= >  ( V × 7.8  ) = ( V  - v ) × 13.6 = >  v / V  =0.43Therefore , FRACTION of the volume of iron piece that remains outside the mercury is 0.43.
