A hammer of mass 400g, moving at 30ms⁻¹, strikes a nail. The nail stops the hammer in a very short time of 0.01s. What is the force of the nail on the hammer? (Ans:1200 N) |
|
Answer» Initial Velocity (u) = 0 Final Velocity (v) = 30 m/s. TIME taken = 0.01 seconds. ∴ Acceleration (a) = (v - u)/t ∴ a = (30 - 0)/0.01 ⇒ a = 30/0.01 ∴ a = 3000 m/s². Mass of the Hammer = 400 g. = 0.4 kg. Now, Using the SECOND law of the motion, Force = mass × acceleration. ∴ Force = 0.4 × 3000 ⇒ F = 1200 N. Hence, the Force acting on the nail is 1200 N. Hope it helps. |
