A fruit vendor has 24 kg. apples. he sold some apples at a profit of 20% and remaining at a loss of 5 % . if he got 10 % profit on the whole transaction then how much apples did he sell at loss?

Answer»

The quantity of apples that the vendor sold at 5% loss is 9.6 kg.

  • A fruit vendor has 24 kg apples.
  • Let the quantity of apples sold by the vendor at 20% profit be x.
  • Therefore, the remaining apples sold at 5% loss will be 24-x.
  • If he GOT 10% profit on WHOLE transaction, then we have to find how much apples did he sell at 5% loss.
  • Let cost price of the apples per kg be m.
  • Amount the got be SELLING apples at 20% profit = 1.2xm
  • Now amount he got by selling apples at 5% loss = 0.95m(24-x) = 22.8m -0.95mx
  • Now the amount he got by selling total number of apples = 1.1×24m

The EQUATION becomes,

1.2xm + 22.8m - 0.95xm = 26.4m

1.2x - 0.95x =3.6

x = 14.4 kg

  • Quantity of apples that he sold at 20% profit is 14.4 kg.
  • Therefore, Quantity of apples he sold at 5% loss is 24-14.4 = 9.6kg.
