Answer» <P>Given: A FISHING trawler sails from Port P in the direction 024° for 30 km and then in the direction 114° for 20 km. To find: Calculate: a) The distance and BEARING of the trawler from P b) The direction in which the trawler must sail in order to return to P Solution: The distance and bearing of the trawler from P A fishing trawler sails from Port P in the direction 024° for 30 km and then in the direction 114° for 20 km. 114° - 24° = 90° ⇒ those two LINES with distance line form a rt. angled triangle. Therefore, the distance is calculated using distance formula. Distance = √ (30² + 20²) = √ (900 + 400) = √ 1300 = 36 km. The direction in which the trawler must sail in order to return to P The angle made by distance to original direction is given by, = cos^-1 ( 30 km / 36 km) = cos^-1 ( 30/36 ) = 33.6 so bearing of final point is, = 24° + 33.6° = 57.6° so trawler has to sail 180° + 57.6° = at bearing 237.6° from final point to reach port P. |
