Answer»

A plane CURVE that does not cross itself is CALLED simple, just as in the case of a broken line. A closed curve is one that starts and ENDS at the same point. A simple closed curve divides the plane into two parts, the region interior and the region EXTERIOR to the curve. This important statement is the Jordan curve theorem, a very deep theorem and one that is very difficult to prove in spite of the fact that it seems so obvious.
