Answer» Correct Answer - Option 4 : 16

Given:

A contractor was engaged to construct a road in 16 days.

Formula used:

\(\frac{M_{1}\ × \ D_{1}}{W_{1}}\ =\ \frac{M_{2}\ × \ D_{2}}{W_{2}}\)

where M= M2 = number of man

D1  = D2 = number of days

W= W2 = part of work

Calculations:

Remaining work = 1 - 5/8 = 3/8

Remaining time = 4 days

Using above formula we get,

⇒ \(\frac{20\ \times\ 12}{\frac{5}{8}}\ =\ \frac{M_{2}\ \times\ 4}{\frac{3}{8}}\)

⇒ M2 = 36

Number of additional workers = 36 – 20 = 16

∴ the correct answer is 16.
