1.

A body of iron floats in mercury . Find the fraction of volume , which remains immersed in mercury .

Answer»

Let V be the VOLUME of the iron body and ν be its volume IMMERSED in mercury.
For floatation Weight of the body = Weight of the LIQUID displaced by the immersed portion of the body.
i.e., V × 7.8 × g = ν × 13.6 × g
or ν/V = 7.8/13.6
= 0.574
or ν = 0.574 V
The FRACTION 0.574 of total volume will remain immersed.
