(a) Based on the nature of intermolecular forces, classify the following solids: Benzene, Silver. (b) AgCl shows Frenkel defect while NaCl does not. Give reason. ( c) What type of semiconductor is formed when Ge is doped with Al?

Answer»

Solution :(a) Benzene: MOLECULAR solid, Silver: metallic solid.
AGCL shows Frenkel DEFECT, while NaCl does not, this is because size of `Ag^(+)` ion is smaller than `Na^(+)` ion. So, `Ag^(+)` ion can easily fit into interstitial site of crystal lattice while `Na^(+)` does not.
( c) p-type semiconductor is formed as Al is TRIVALENT (group-13 ELEMENT).
