1.

9. State one way to obtain a greater moment of a forceabout a given axis of rotation.

Answer»

Moment of force is also called Torque represented by \tau .

It can be defined as the PRODUCT of force and perpendicular distance between the line of force and axis of ROTATION .

Torque = Force × Perpendicular distance

In vector FORM ,

\tt  \vec{\tau} =  \vec{r}\times  \vec{f}

The moment of force , hence , BECOMES DIRECTLY proportional to the force and perpendicular distance .

Therefore , to increase moment of force , following of the two could be done :

1) The magnitude of the force could be made larger .

2) The distance between axis of rotation and line of force could be increased .

SI unit of torque is Nm .
