Many ancient civilisations like the Indus Valley, Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilisation started at the river banks of Indus, Nile and Tigris and Euphrates respectively. Rivers causes flood which brings silt along with and deposits in the flood plain thereby increasing the fertility of the soil. These plains of river are basically the food bowl of a particular region. Hence population is very thick. Eg is the Indo Gangetic Brahmaputra Plain. Besides the beels/ swamps rtc are full of aquatic life which supports livelihood to people living in the vicinity. riverways also serve as means of transportation. Many important rivers has port which are uded for carrying cargos. River also serves as inland water transportation. Waterway is the cheapest means of transportation. Rivers are used for irrigation purposes, generation of hydroelectricity, recreational purposes etc. Many important cities of the world like Moscow, London, Varanasi, Kolkata, Haridwar etc are situated on the banks of river Water pollutioniscauseddue to several reasons - Sewage And WasteWater: Sewage, garbage and liquid waste of households, agricultural lands and factories are discharged into lakes andrivers.
