1.

2. What does the "Compton Effect" tell us ?

Answer»

Compton scattering, discovered by Arthur HollyCompton, isthescatteringof a photon by a charged particle, usually an electron. It results in a decrease in energy (increase in wavelength) of the photon (which may be an X-ray or gamma ray photon), called theCompton effect.Compton's effectisimportantbecause demonstrates that light cannot be explained purely as a wave phenomenon. The classical theory of an electromagnetic wave cannot explain low intensity shifts in wavelength for that radiation must behave as particles to explain low-intensityCompton scattering.
