Let the speed of the steamer in still water = x km/hr

Speed downstream = (x + 2) km/hr

Distance between two ports = 4(x + 2) km .........1

Speed downstream = (x - 2) km/hr

Distance between two ports = 5(x - 2) km .........2

From equation 1 and 2, we get

4(x + 2) = 5(x - 2)

=> 4x + 8 = 5x - 10

=>4x + 8 + 10 = 5x

=>4x + 18 = 5x

=> 5x - 4x = 18

=> x = 18 km/hr

So,the speed of the steamer in still water = 18 km/hr
